Surgical Technology / Pre-Surgical Technology
Mission
The mission of the Surgical Technology Department at Faulkner State Community College is to develop competent and caring surgical technologists. These individuals will be able to function as part of the surgical team in any surgical setting. They will be able to make sound judgments based on solid knowledge of sterile technique, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and medications utilized in the sterile field. We strive to instill a commitment to continual learning in graduates of the Surgical Technology Program.

Application
In addition to applying for admission to Faulkner State Community College, applicants must complete a separate surgical technology application. Please note that this application must be returned to the Surgical Technology Department in order to be considered for the program. A physical examination, CPR, immunization records, drug screen, and background check will be required after admission to the program.
Medical Terminology (HPS 105) and General Biology (BIO 103) are required for acceptance into the program. The Director of Nursing and Allied Health may waive a pre-requisite pending circumstances.
Classes begin every Fall Semester. Students are encouraged to complete the general educational course requirements (Sciences, English, Math, etc.), prior to admission to the program. A 2.0 GPA minimum is required for admittance. Students who have completed the general education requirements will be given preference when selecting students for the program.

Progression Policy
In order to continue in the surgical technology program, the student must:
- Maintain a grade of C or better in every surgical technology course, Medical Terminology, General Biology, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, and Microbiology
- Complete all required general educational courses in semesters as scheduled, unless completed prior. Any exceptions must be approved by the Director of Nursing and Allied Health.
- Maintain the ability to perform essential functions
- Maintain current, health professional CPR and required immunizations
- Maintain the sequence of surgical technology courses. Withdrawals, or a ‘D’ or ‘F’ in a surgical technology course, will stop progression in the program until the course(s) is successfully repeated. Course repetition will be based on instructor approval and program resources.
- Students will complete the required clinical rotation objectives and competencies
- Students must adhere to clinical facility and program policies and procedures. Students must maintain professional, ethical standards and professional patient care.
- Failure to meet any of the above requirements may result in failure of a course or termination from the program.
Dismissal
Dismissal from the program may result from failure to complete the course requirements (ie. withdrawal or a grade of D or F) or from disciplinary measures.
- Students who have been dismissed from the program for failure to maintain a C in classes may apply for readmission to the program. Readmission is at the discretion of the surgical technology instructors and the program director.
-
Students dismissed from the program for disciplinary reasons and/or unsatisfactory clinical performance will not be allowed readmission to the surgical technology program.
Reinstatement
Students whose progress was interrupted and who desire to be reinstated in the program must follow the following procedure:
- Submit a request for reinstatement in writing to the program director.
- Submit the request prior to a year from the withdrawal or failure. Reinstatement will not be granted if more than a year has transpired.
- Demonstrate competency in all previous surgical technology coursework. Students returning may be required to retake instrumentation tests, competency tests, and perform mock surgeries with passing scores.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures effective at the point of reinstatement.
- A student may be readmitted only once.
Reinstatement to the surgical technology program is not guaranteed. Reinstatement may be denied due to, but not limited to, any of the following:
- Unavailability of clinical space.
- Grade point average less than 2.0 at current institution.
- Refusal by clinical agencies to accept the student for clinical experiences.
- Failure to demonstrate competency in previous surgical technology coursework.
- More than a year having elapsed since last enrollment in a surgical technology course. This requires reapplication for the entire program.
- Dismissal from the program.
