What is Student Support Services?

Student Support Services is a federally funded TRIO Program. This means that the funds to operate this program are provided to Faulkner State Community College through the U.S. Department of Education. Student Support Services at Faulkner State Community College provides academic services for 150 students. The purpose of SSS is to increase retention and graduation rates of participants, increase the transfer rates of students from 2 year to 4 year institutions, and to foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of undergraduate students who are first generation, low income, and/or have a disability. This purpose is met through various forms of academic assistance, counseling, and advising. Our primary goal at Faulkner State is to help you receive your Associate Degree within two years.

Who is eligible for Student Support Services?

Any student who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, has been accepted for enrollment at Faulkner State Community College, has a program approved academic need for assistance, and meets one or more of the following federal criteria is eligible to submit an application:

  1. Is a first generation college student (parents/legal guardian did not graduate from a four-year college or university)
  2. Demonstrates a need for academic assistance
  3. Meets the stated criteria for family taxable income
  4. Has a documented disability – an appropriate medical practitioner of State Rehabilitation Service must document all disabilities

What are the benefits of Student Support Services?

  • Individualized assessment of needs by SSS staff
  • Tutorial assistance as needed
  • Academic counseling and advising
  • Career Planning
  • Workshops in a variety of areas
  • Participation in selected cultural events
  • Mid-term class monitoring of students’ progress in order to adjust program services to meet the needs identified by instructors
  • Assistance with preparation for transfer to 4 year colleges and universities
  • Monitoring of students’ progress to assure they are meeting financial aid requirements
  • Assistance with completion of financial aid paperwork
  • Additional assistance based on participant’s individual needs
  • Supplemental grant award to eligible participants

What are Student Support Services requirements?

  • Attend counseling sessions bi-monthly
  • Attend tutorial sessions, if necessary, for at least one hour per week
  • Attend seminars and workshops sponsored by the SSS Program
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Maintain eligibility for needed financial aid
  • Participate fully in individually prescribed program services

How do I apply for the program?

Print out an PDF formatapplication, complete it and bring it by the Student Support Services Office located in the McGowan Administration Annex, Room 109. The SSS Office is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
