Challenge to Learn, Support to Succeed

TRIO: Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program designed to assist students in grades 9-12 prepare for and attend a postsecondary institution upon graduation of high school.

Eligibility

Since this is a federally funded program, students may be selected based on the following criteria:

  • The participant meets certain income requirements.
  • Students with disabilities.

Services

The Upward Bound Program offers an array of services and activities that meet the academic, personal, and cultural needs of its participants. Individualized and small group setting ensure maximum opportunity for students to receive special attention. These services are provided to generate among the participants the motivation and skills necessary to become successful high school graduates and future college students.

These services will be available to freshmen through senior students, therefore different activities are provided to meet the educational challenges of specific grade levels. Such activities include:

  • One-on-one tutoring/instruction in English, literature, mathematics, science, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school.
  • Academic, financial, and personal and career counseling.
  • Exposure to academic programs and cultural events.
  • Tutorial services.
  • Information of postsecondary education opportunities.
  • Assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications.
  • Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams.

Academics

The Upward Bound academic year and summer components offer an intense curriculum. Students receive counseling and tutoring in major academic courses. The academic curriculum will not replace or substitute any high school course, and no credit units are earned upon completion of the program. The Upward Bound Program is considered a supplementary program that provides enrichment to the regular high school program.

Cultural/Educational enrichment activities and field trips are considered classes. Tutorial services are tutoring appointments assigned to each student by the educational coordinator or educational teacher/tutor. Tutoring is given at each student’s high school and on the FSCC campus. Guidance appointments are appointments assigned to the student, if needed, by the counselor for a counseling session with the counselor or a counseling service in the community. All students are required to attend and participate in all cultural and educational enrichment activities and field trips, tutorial appointments, and guidance/counseling appointments.

Cost

ALL of the services and activities provided by Upward Bound are at NO COST to the participants or their families. Our goal is to give every Upward Bound participant an opportunity to embark on and successfully complete a post secondary education. Therefore, we view our resources as an investment in each of our student’s future.

The only cost to you is your time, commitment and an eagerness to do your best!
